IMdlDB is a firefox addon created to allow IMDB visitors to launch automatic searches on Google and find copyrighted material on HTTP servers.

This addon is a "proof of concept", it was only developed to prove a point : no matter what they try to prohibit (Bittorrent, ed2k, newsgroups, ...) there will always be a way to find whatever copyrighted material you want using totally legal tools or websites (in this case IMDB and Google).

It is time for editors and their audience to work together so that both of them can have what they want/need... Otherwise it will remain an absurd fight between editors and their customers.

Pirates (culture-addicts) are often willing to pay for their movies / musics / show / ... They just don't want (or simply can't) to pay the extremely high price the editors fixed... And if you need a proof for that, just think about all premium clients of hosts such as rapidshare, megaupload, ... IMdlDb uses.

What are the solutions ?

There are certainly a lot of solutions... I'll give you the two I prefer :

Choruss : a company dedicated to collect funds from end user (every month) and disburse them to copyright holders...

Global patronage[PDF] : every end user decides who must be rewarded. This way the process of disbursing is no longer a problem
